The flags of the International Folklore Festival “Europeade” will be raised in Klaipėda in just one week –. For five days, Klaipėda will be filled with European folklore songs, while six concert venues will invite you to experience authentic dances and a unique atmosphere of togetherness. The 57th European Folk Culture Celebration “Europeade” will offer performances of eighty groups in various venues of Klaipėda Old Town.

The oldest city in Lithuania, Klaipėda, celebrates the 770th anniversary of its foundation. On the eve of its birthday, the only port city in Lithuania, which has made a rich and meaningful journey through the history, receives an extraordinary gift, which is the return of the colorful European Folklore Culture Festival “Europeade” to the city after three long years of waiting. The return of the “Europeade” festival is not a lottery ticket unexpectedly drawn by a lucky hand, it is a meaningful and businesslike evaluation that recognized the work of the whole city community, the atmosphere of Klaipėda and the hospitality of its people, when the festival was hosted for the first time in 2009. This honorable return after thirteen years, for each of us is a great obligation to provide a welcoming and safe harbor for our guests, who are sincerely expected in our city,” mayor of Klaipėda city Vytautas Grubliauskas says.

For almost a week, 13th to 17th of July, Klaipėda will become a welcoming port for the participants of the international “Europeade” festival. Almost eighty groups from fourteen European countries (the Åland Islands, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Estonia, Spain, Finland, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Sweden) will present their national folklore in the form of dances and songs. The main goal of the festival is to promote the diversity of European cultures and encourage friendship between nations.

The festival “Europeade” rarely returns to the same city, therefore, the return to Klaipėda is a great compliment to the city and its people. In fact, “Europeade” was hosted most of the time, up to 8 times, in Antwerp (Belgium), where it was held for the first time in 1964. Three times each, the colorful festival of European nations was hosted in Martigny city (Switzerland), Horsens (Denmark), Nuoro (Sardinia, Italy), Rennes (France). Twice, “Europeade” returned to Turin (Italy), Vienna (Austria), Valencia (Spain), Frankenberg (Germany), Zamora (Spain), Figueira da Foz (Portugal).

The opening fiesta and the main events of the festival will take place at Klaipėda’s Open-Air Summer Stage. On the very first evening of the festival, July 13, “An Evening of National Culture Welcoming” will take place at Theater Square.

On Thursday, July 14, various groups from different countries will perform at different venues around the city (at Theater Square, at Karlskronos Square, near sculpture “The Fisherman”, near the monument for united Lithuania “The Ark”, at the square near the sailing ship “Meridianas” and at Danės square).

The official opening of the event will take place on July 14 at 7 pm, when the flag of the 57th “Europeade” will flap at Klaipėda’s Open-Air Summer Stage. The bright costumes of the participants and warming smiles will create an unforgettable spectacle in Klaipėda after long years of waiting. At the beginning of the event, the audience will be greeted by Lithuanian folklore singer Rasa Serra, who will perform songs from the region of Lithuania Minor.

On Friday, July 15, citizens and guests will be entertained by concerts of music bands at Theatre Square and by performances of the participants in the streets of the city. In the “Europeade” family, children are not forgotten, as children group concerts and “Europeade” Children’s Ball are planned to take place at Theatre Square. Friday’s “Europeade” program will be concluded by “Jam Session” at the night. On Saturday, July 16, those who did not have a chance to meet the groups, will have the opportunity to watch the performances of representatives from other nations in various venues of Klaipėda city.

On Saturday, July 16 at 5 pm, the grand “Europeade” parade will color the old town of Klaipėda. Almost eighty groups from all parts of Europe will flood the streets of the city with dances and songs to greet the audience. The route of the parade: J. Janonio st., Herkus Mantas st., Atgimimo sq., Tiltų st., and the final point is at the Old Market roundabout. The final chord of the “Europeade” festival will be played at the closing concert at the Open-Air Summer Stage on Sunday.

The “Europeade” festival was held for the first time in Klaipėda 13 years ago; for the second time, it was scheduled to take place in 2020 and 2021, but it was cancelled due to the pandemic and rescheduled to this summer. Therefore, the second “Europeade” fiesta in Klaipėda is an outstanding gift not only for the port city, which is celebrating its 770th anniversary, but also for the whole Lithuania. The event, which will take place in the middle of the summer, will bring together crowds of thousands of participants from different regions to represent its folklore arts.

“Europeade” has been organized since 1964. The festival was held for the first time in Antwerp city, Belgium. A pioneer of “Europeade” is considered a man of Flemish origin Mon De Clopper (1922–1998), who is the founder of the Flemish Folk Culture Association (Vlaamse Volkskunstbeweging).
